Recession proof you grocery bill by growing TONS m Recession proof you grocery bill by growing TONS more food - even in smaller spaces. Succession planting means you can grow 2, 3, 4 or more rounds of a crop depending on your season length and how quickly a plant matures. For example, I can plant 2 rounds of cabbage per season but 3 successions of bush beans. This means in the same amount of space you can exponentially increase your yields! Have you tried this yet??

Have an abundance of eggs and not sure what to do Have an abundance of eggs and not sure what to do with them? Try this technique called water glassing to preserve them for the winter when chickens don’t lay as often!

Use FRESH and CLEAN eggs, but do not wash them. This removes the protective bloom on them that keeps bacteria out.

Place in a container, use ratio of 1oz pickling lime to 1 quart of water and pour over top. Place lid and store in a cool dark area!

It’s super simple and a great way to have eggs in the winter months when chickens are laying less!

Have you ever tried this??!

This is a regular plastic hoop house that stays well above freezing even in single digit temps. Before the water barrels it was the same temp as the outside by the morning. Now, it’s keeping the seedlings warm as they grow.

We have a shorter growing season so starting plants early so they can be larger when it finally IS time to put them out is awesome!

It doesn’t have to be perfect. In fact, I’m sure it won’t be. But each plant, each year you grow your own food is another step toward your goal.

Using permaculture makes gardening easier, less time consuming and more abundant!

It’s so incredibly rewarding to head to your backyard for ingredients for dinner instead of the grocery store - even if it’s just basil in a pot. Don’t let excuses get in your way, people find a way to grow food in most any circumstance.

Even in single digit temps, our greenhouse stays a Even in single digit temps, our greenhouse stays above freezing!

How? Thermal mass: It's is one of the most underutilized yet incredibly easy tools to boost your greenhouse warmth in the winter.

Simply put, thermal mass is any dense energy that stores heat.

While there are tons of different ways to put thermal mass to use, the most common is water.

The black barrels you see in the video are filled with good old H2O, which gathers & stores heat during the day, from both direct light and warmth in the greenhouse.

Those barrels are like batteries made out of water!

The heat is then recycled back into the greenhouse as tempuratures fall during the night.

This awesome process allows those of us growing in colder climates to start seeds in the greenhouse or high tunnel earlier in the season.

Do you use any type of thermal mass to extend your growing season? I want to hear about it in the comments below!

So what if you could have an abundant low-work garden, growing your own food, in 1/4 the amount of time?⁣
⁣
I believe most people are mistaken when they **think** that gardening takes too much work, or time, and I want to share 5 ways we grow food without taking all of our time...⁣
⁣
What's more is that the exact strategies to make a low-work garden actually help:⁣
⁣
🌱 Improve Poor Soils⁣
🌱 Reduce Pest Issues⁣
🌱 Reduce Disease Problems⁣
🌱 Increase Water Efficiency⁣
🌱 & More..⁣
⁣
I mean, why wouldn't a person want to use these strategies in their garden!?!⁣
⁣
This is something we have been doing FOR YEARS now, and it just kills me when people say their gardens are plagued with problems, take all of their time or have small harvests.⁣
⁣
So, if you want to grow food with less work and free up your time, check out this week's YouTube video. I promise to show you 5 important time saving permaculture gardening secrets.⁣

Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberri Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries...you name it, I’d grow it!

So then, WHY? Because berries are perennial, meaning you don’t really even need to do ANYTHING each season and they just grow (with good soil and water, of course)!

If you've been following along with us for awhile now, you know that permaculture gardening blows conventional methods out of the water.

And planting permaculture perennials are a perfect example of this!

Plant your berries one time and with very little work, they'll continue producing for you for a lifetime.

This last year revealed some MAJOR things to me, a This last year revealed some MAJOR things to me, and I've started to look at permaculture differently.

You're here because you have a goal to live a more sustainable life - this is what most people who are interested in permaculture focus on.

But these are still uncertain times and pigs just might fly.

I am learning that MORE resilience can REMOVE fear and replace it with ease and joy.

How would you feel with less stress and worry?

Let me explain...

Gardening with nature is fantastic, eco-gardens gardens are super, but does that mean they're resilient?

Not really.

TRUE permaculture teaches how to be RESILIENT - the ultimate standard.

If the trucks stopped shipping like we recently saw in Canada, or if the power went out for a while, would your garden, farm or homestead stop functioning in its tracks?

I'm not dooming and glooming here, but we need to be aware of problems in order to implement solutions.

And it raises some questions...

Could you feed your chickens if the feed wasn't available?

Could you water the garden if the power was out?

Too many permaculture systems, mine included, rely too heavily on supporting infrastructures such as shipping and power.

And therefore they actually fail in being true permaculture systems.

True sustainable living is also resilient living.

This last year has been a blessing in disguise.

It has shown me so many areas that need improvement - from the land to my business to my life.

In what ways can you live a more resilient life?

A straw bale home built with more natural material A straw bale home built with more natural materials is an eco-efficient alternative to our modern way of building!

Instead of that toxic pink insulation, our home uses straw bales with an R-value of 50.

The strategically placed windows and awnings allow maximum sun in the winter and block the summer sun to keep cooler.

These are just a few of the benefits of a passive solar straw bale home. Would you like to know more??

Growing your own food DOES NOT need to take all yo Growing your own food DOES NOT need to take all your time, require tons of work or be confusing and overwhelming! You don’t need to spend all your time battling pests, weeding or have tons of space.

You just need to stop doing the things in the garden that are ironically creating more work - such as tilling, or using pesticides. What you need to be doing is switching to strategies that create less work and free up your time - gardening the permaculture way (building soil health and bio-diversity).

When applying permaculture, not only are you saving time but you’re creating healthier plants, soil for more abundant and successful gardens.

β€œDo what you love and call it work” as the lyr β€œDo what you love and call it work” as the lyrics say.

It’s become evidently clear, the happiest I’ve ever been is when I began to intentionally design the life I wanted to live. Each moment is a choice for what you do with your time, where you spend your energy.

The more moments we choose to invest toward our goals and take control of our lives, the less subject we are to outside influences (job, economic impact, food systems…)

If we don’t actively choose where to put our energy, then we become more subject to the will of the universe and are able to be pushed and pulled by external events.

So the question I always ask myself is - what am I doing today to make sure my tomorrow looks even better.

Check out the fruits of our labor. Clean, organic Check out the fruits of our labor.

Clean, organic food for our family grown using permaculture zones in a BIG way.

Harvests like these don't take up all our resources & time. If fact, it's completely the opposite.

Time is one of the huge roadblocks that many people have to growing their own food, or living sustainably.

But this is actually a huge misconception.

We can certainly dismantle this limiting belief. You see, I don't have time either - as a husband, father, homesteader, entrepreneur, and more, it is hard to fit it all in.

But clearly it's possible as you can see from the abundance of this video that showcases just a small portion of our harvest.

One of the many methods I use to create such abundance on our farm is embracing the permaculture zone tools to identify how to restructure our garden for maximum efficiency and bounty this coming spring.

Do you have success applying permaculture?

Drop me a note in the comments & tell me all about it.

Gardening in a cold climate? Does it feel like the Gardening in a cold climate? Does it feel like there’s not enough time in the season to grow an abundance of food?

I get it. We went from zone 8b to now zone 5 and it feels like spring will never come. The ground is still frozen and the night temps are frigid.

BUT there are so many ways to extend your season - this growing dome greenhouse is just one of them.

Right now we are installing used water barrels for thermal mass in the hoop house we have. The heat they collect during the day will radiate through the night to keep it warmer than outside, this allowing earlier planting of seedlings 🌱

A student uses old milk jugs and mini greenhouses up in Canada. You can heat your greenhouse passively with a compost pile...

We’ll be showing you more ways this spring as we implement them but I’d love to know - what are you favorite ways to extent the season?!
