Here’s a little secret: I’ve been known to be a bit impulsive on occasion.
The decision to quit my job and move to Hawaii. The time I invited Beth to leave Denver to come to live with me.
I like to call it “trusting my gut” or “taking a leap of faith” but others might see it as making rash decisions.
Most of the time, this has worked out in my favor – with whatever jump I’ve taken, I’ll find a net to catch me.
But there is a time and a place when I most certainly do NOT make decisions from a place of unknown.
One of those instances is when it came time to make the big purchase aka- our homestead.
Maybe you’re getting ready to purchase yours as well, or perhaps you’re still on the sidelines thinking about it, but a bit fearful you might make the wrong decision and end up on a homestead that just doesn’t work.
It can be a major hurdle for some to get past, plunking down cold hard cash and/or signing up for a mortgage. And rightly so – it’s one of the biggest commitments you will make.
I was unsure and timid about making such an important and costly decision. But here’s the thing:
Finding the right land or property is the #1 most important thing when beginning your homestead or farm.
I struggled with this a lot when we first began looking for a place to call our homestead. It was nerve-racking to think I’d choose something that wouldn’t end up working.
My biggest challenge? I had no idea what I was looking at when walking a piece of land and I had no idea what to even look for.
How in the hell was I going to make a good financial choice if I had no clue what the right piece of land even was?!?
So, I fumbled around for a while, feeling like it was an insurmountable obstacle.
There was this one property we almost purchased because we got so excited about the possibilities, leaving us blindsided by some major flaws.
Fortunately, the seller got cold feet and didn’t end up selling it – saving us from a big $230,000 whoopsie.
Months later we found the ONLY garden spot on that land flooded every spring or that there was major topsoil loss happening, just to name a few of the issues. Phew!
The lack of knowing what to look for or what to learn made me feel inadequate. Dumb even.
Yet I KNEW that there was something out there that would teach me how to know good land when I saw it.
Enter: my first Permaculture Design Course.
It was expensive, but what it promised sounded like everything I wanted to know, so I signed up.
It was the first day of class is when I got knocked upside the head with the biggest “Ah HAAAAA” that I have had in at least a decade.
Permaculture was the thing that I had been looking for all along! Finally, the answer to this big question.
Now, you are likely thinking, wait – I thought we were talking about finding land for a homestead or farm??

Through learning permaculture, I was quickly and easily able to walk onto a piece of land and read it like a second language.
I could tell the story of the plants, point out the hidden features of water, and predict the future of the soil – all with a glance.
It allowed me to walk dozens of pieces of land and be able to quickly determine how well it would suit our homestead needs.
Even after become stewards of our own 30 acres, permaculture helps me make smart decisions every single day.
Permaculture is a big topic, so I’ve distilled down the highlights of everything you need to know to easily find the perfect piece of land or know if your existing piece of land is ideal for your homestead or farm goals.
