Permaculture is all about saving soil and harvesting water. We want to keep soil on site firstly to keep fertility on the land but also to keep sediments from polluting the watersheds we are in. Head cuts can form as water flows out of culverts and starts to vertically erode the drainage ditch – sending sediment down stream and eventually damaging the culvert and road.
We created a Zuni bowl at this head cut to stop the erosion and shortly downstream in the drainage added a one rock check dam to help slow the water down. Together these features stop erosion and harvest water by slowing it down an keeping on site as long as possible.
